ABBREVS (and Freo)

OMGoodness, the Aussies love their abbreviations! And just generally shortening any and all words in some way. For anyone who finds this sort of thing interesting, I've compiled a list of the lesser known ones (at least, they were lesser known to me) for you to enjoy:

Relly = Relative

Op = Operation

Arvo = Afternoon (I still can't figure that one out.)

Agro = Aggravated (I'm going to start using this one for sure.)

Mackas = McDonald's

Brekky = Breakfast

Chocky = Chocolate

Postie = Mail Man (this is how they get around - rain or shine!)

Ute = Utility Vehicle (particularly this one - I've driven one of these you know. I did not pull it off.)

Op Shop = Thrift Store ('Op Shopping' is pretty popular around here, which I love! Good Sammy is my favorite so far, such a cute name!)

Lollies = Candy and sweets in general, not specifically lolly pops.

Wheely Bin = Garbage bin

Bin Day = Garbage collection day

Tip = Garbage dump (I dont know why I've heard so many garbage-related phrases.)

Footy = Australian Rules Football

Servo = Fuel Service Station

Freo = Fremantle, Western Australia

Speaking of Freo, Jimmy and I hopped down there last weekend to make the most of the beautiful weather. It's a gorgeous little port town with historic buildings, as it was the first settlement in Western Australia. Here are a few pictures:

Entrance to the Fremantle Markets.
The market has vendors selling all sorts,
my favorite was 'The Yard' which was the farmers' market section.

Pretentious Queenslander

The Round House - the oldest building in WA.
Built as a prison for colonial and indigenous offenders.
At least those prisoners had a heck of a view.

Ready for our Fish and Chips at Cicerello's,
a popular seafood place.

It was the first game day of the season. Roll Tide.
Nice little view from Cicerello's

Jellies in the water!!
There were TONS of them!
This was right in the same area as the picture above.

The Whaler's Tunnel underneath
The Round House, built by the
Fremantle Whaling Company in the 1800s.

It provided easy access to the town from the beach.

Fremantle Train Station - still used as the
functional train stop for Freo today.

So Hipster.
